Justice systems are also part of the sustainability challenge

On 21–22 April 2026, representatives of Universiteti Luarasi and the CCIS Albania Center for Comparative and International Studies, as partners in the CORE-ED Academy project (Transformative Educational Strategies: Fostering Inclusion and Shared Values in Juvenile Justice through Dynamic Correctional Pedagogy and Specialist Professionalization, Empowered by the “LiberateSkills” Correctional Excellence Pact for Skills – Project 101179359, Erasmus+ CBHE), participated in the European Symposium on Detention Houses 2026 in Tirana.

Their participation reflected the growing convergence between educational innovation in juvenile justice and broader European justice reform efforts aimed at building more humane, inclusive, and sustainable systems.

A particularly important bridge between these two agendas was the contribution of PhD Olta Qejvani, CCIS expert in the CORE-ED project, RESCALED Ambassador in Tirana, and co-organiser of the Symposium. During the second day of the event, she presented the vision and early impact of CORE-ED Academy in modernising professional education for juvenile justice systems. CORE-ED’s “pedagogy-first” and interdisciplinary approach strongly complements the RESCALED philosophy, which advocates for replacing large-scale detention institutions with small-scale, community-integrated detention houses that foster dignity, responsibility, reintegration, and social connectedness.

The Symposium reinforced a shared European commitment to rethinking justice through the lenses of People, Planet, and Prosperity, culminating in the launch of the #1000houses Campaign an ambitious call to transform 100 prisons into 1,000 detention houses by 2030.

CORE-ED Academy is proud to contribute to this broader transformation by ensuring that the future professionals of juvenile justice are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to support sustainable, child-centred, and community-based justice ecosystems.
